There are 4 basic elements you need before you can play a video on a pocket PC.
The first is ActiveSync. That's the software you need to enable a connection between your Pocket PC and your desktop PC or laptop. This is free from the microsoft.com site. You will also need the cable that you connect from your Pocket PC to your desktop computer. You can buy that from any leading PC store.
Now don't just yet transfer videos from your desktop to your Pocket PC. You'll still need two other elements.
The third element you need is the software to play the video. While most Pocket PC's already carry a smaller sized Windows media player, this is limited and may not be able to play certain video types.
Fortunately there is Pocket TV. You can download the free version, called Pocket TV Classic, from http://www.pockettv.com. Install Pocket TV into your Pocket PC.
Don't just yet transfer videos from your desktop to your Pocket PC. You'll still need one more element to play a video on a pocket PC.
And that's the Tsunami mpeg converter or TMPGEnc. You'll need a converter to convert videos to a format that won't be too large for the Pocket PC and that the Pocket PC can read. The TMPGEnc is one of the best and it's free to download at http://www.tmpgenc.net.
Install the TMPGEnc to your desktop, not your Pocket PC. Now you'll need the templates to be able to convert the video to the format of your Pocket PC. You can download the templates from http://www.pockettv.com/template/all-templates.zip. Unzip the file into the TMPGEnc directory. If there's a templates directory in the TMPGEnc directory, unzip the file there; otherwise, create the templates directory.
To convert your video, follow these steps:
1. Start TMPGEnc and select Cancel to exit the wizard. Now, for each of your video files, do steps 2 to 5:
2. Load your video source with the upper "Browse" button.
3. Load the template you want to use with the "Load" button (these next steps are crucial!):
- Pocket PC portrait 240x196 is for portrait video (stereo). The total bit rate should be around 270Kbit/sec.
- Pocket PC full screen 320x240 is for full screen video (stereo). The total bit rate should be around 420Kbit/sec.
- Pocket PC wide screen 320x176 is for wide screen video (stereo). The total bit rate should be around 330Kbit/sec.
The "fast" templates will encode a lot faster although you'll get a slightly lower video quality.
4. Check the name of the Output file and change it if necessary (with the lower Browse button)
5. Hit "Start" and wait.
6. Copy the output MPEG files to your Pocket PC and play them with PocketTV!
That's how play a video on a pocket PC. Enjoy!
