How to Compare PDA’s

by Ray Andrew

A PDA (personal data assistant) can be an important investment. Price is not the only issue facing a PDA shopper. One must also be concerned with features, as a PDA may become integral to one’s daily life and functioning. As such, before making a final decision, one must first be sure to ’s carefully.

Any time one is purchasing an electronic item, the popular Latin expression ‘caveat emptor’ should come to mind. The phrase, translated as ‘buyer beware’, reflects the reality of the marketplace. One cannot trust that any given purchase will truly meet his or her needs or that any product in a category will be satisfactory. The electronics market is littered with sub-par products that are strongly hyped and sold on the strength of misleading or inaccurate marketing. PDA’s are not an exception to this rule. There are many options available, and they are not all of sufficient quality. That is why it is essential to carefully ’s.

How can one ’s The key is identifying multiple possibilities that fit within one’s desired price range and then evaluating their features and qualities carefully to guarantee a satisfying purchase. As much as most of us would like to avoid extensive research and would prefer to simply pick ’something’ quickly, knowledge is power and a quality strategy to ’s can go a long way in avoiding disappointment.

One should start by formulating a list of the features they require in a PDA. The importance of each feature should also be noted, as some may be more critical than others. This may seem to be an unnecessary step. However, unless a careful list is constructed, one may overlook a particular PDA’s deficiencies or strengths while . It is also possible to accidentally overlook a desired feature while he or she compares PDA’s an error often not realized until it is too late. After assembling the feature list, one may then determine their budge for the purchase.

At this point, one should begin the hunt for an objective source of information that provides an in-depth look at the various features and options present in a wide array of PDA’s. Optimally, one will avoid relying upon sources that offer biased perspectives. For instance, a manufacturer’s website will probably do its very best to avoid mentioning areas of weakness, instead focusing on a PDA’s strengths. In order to ’s accurately, a more factual recitation of attributes is necessary.

One may then begin to ’s one by one, looking at each model that falls within the desired price range closely and noting which desired qualities it possesses and which it lacks. After assessing the PDA’s, the most clearly desirable candidates should be readily apparent.

Choosing a PDA can be a confusing process. However, by taking an informed and organized approach to finding the model that best meets one’s needs, the matter can be simplified a great deal. If one is willing to ’s based on a predefined list of desirable characteristics, conducted with budgetary restrictions in mind can help lead to a wonderful experience and will result in the purchase of PDA that will perform all necessary functions in a way that makes organization and scheduling a joy. Anyone in the market for these amazing tools simply must make the effort to ’s before making a purchase.

Blackberry Patent Woes: A Boon for Pocket PC Gamers?

by Damian Julien

Things are looking a bit gloomy for the , PDA cousin to the .

The latest appeal over a patent dispute has been turned down, making an injunction against selling the in the US all the more possible.

I’ve always thought that if you did your research and opted to purchase one of these devices, you weren’t interested in much besides its contact management features.

It really doesn’t pack the required processing oomph for games.

To play devil’s advocate, the is really not the ideal vehicle for e-mail on the run if you happen to reside in the Greater Toronto Area.

I’ve mentioned this in passing in my October 4 blog entry, but data GPRS plans in Toronto happen to be extremely cost-prohibitive.

Coupled with increasing gas prices, you really don’t to siphon your budget by doing Outlook sends and receives on the run unless you have a few hot spots handy.

Fortunately, Starbucks is mimicking our Second Cup franchise by offering free Wi-Fi access after trundling behind the technology curve for Starbucks locations in the States.

It’s not often that Canada is behind the US technology curve, especially as the greater majority of Canadians are internet savvy.

That probably accounts for the greater prevalence of software piracy.

Nevertheless, as dim as things may look for the Canadian Research in Motion company, this bodes well for the world.

If we can’t have our Blackberrys, we will have our Palms and PCs. A burgeoning market demand for these units is on the horizon if final judgement is found against RIM.

Which means more excellent PDA games, of course, as and game developers cope to keep with anticipated increased demand.

Of course, most of us will be chomping at the bit until this occurs.

Anyway, you’ll have to excuse me. A new bowling game release awaits patiently on my iPAQ 4150.

Hopefully, the elusive 300 game is within reach today.

Buyer’s Guide - Palm vs Pocket PC

by Sunil Tanna

Trying to decide on a PDA? The first choice that you’ll have to make is whether to go with a OS system or a ( ) system:

- systems run an operating system called “ OS”.

- systems run “ ”. This looks and operates a lot like the more familiar versions of Microsoft that you use on your desktop or laptop . is not identical to the larger versions of , and generally does not run the same software, but it does interoperate well with other Microsoft programs.

Some features are a dead heat between systems and PCs:

- Both systems and PCs can do contact management, calendaring and to-do-lists.

- Both and PCs can do reasonable handwriting recognition. In either case, it can take a small amount of getting used to.

- Both and PCs have models available with digital cameras.

- Some models of both and PCs support music, multimedia and MP3 (MP3 is supported pretty much on all models). You’ll need to check the specs of individual models to see exactly what features they offer.

- Internet connectivity is available for most and PCs.

Here are some reasons to choose :

- systems are usually cheaper. This is because OS devices often have less memory and a slower processor. They can get away with this, without you noticing, because OS is highly optimized to run on low-end hardware.

- systems are often lighter and smaller than PCs. Of course, that isn’t always the case, so you need to check the specs on individual models when making comparisons.

- systems, especially those with slower processors, often will run longer between battery recharges.

- systems, are in our opinion, slightly easier to use. PCs use a cut-down version of the standard interface, which while powerful, can offer too many confusing options.

- systems have a simple and foolproof backup/restore feature which is triggered automatically whenever you sync to your main . PCs don’t automatically backup, so you need to remember to pick the option.

And here are some reasons to choose a :

- PCs integrate better with Microsoft Word and Excel. They can read your existing files, and it’s easy to transfer them across. OS doesn’t have built-in support for Word or Excel, but there are third party programs available, at extra cost, that can do the job.

- PCs integrate with Microsoft Outlook. Again, for systems you need extra software, although in some cases this extra software may be bundled with your PDA.

- PCs often have a wider range of WiFi and other connectivity options. Of course, you’ll need to check the specs of the individual that you’re considering.

Conclusions:

Of course, your opinion may differ, but for what it’s worth, here’s how I’d decide:

- I would choose if I wanted a simple low-end PDA.

- If I wanted more power and connectivity options, I’d look at both and systems.

- If there was any special line-of-business software that I needed to run, and it was only available on one or the other of OS and (), of course that would dictate my choice.

- As always, I’d carefully check the specs of any individual machines that I was considering. There are good (and some not so good) models available, of both and .

The Beginning of the PDA Explosion

by Garry Allen

Here is a little history on PDA’s that I think you will find interesting, at least I did, so I thought I would share it with you anyway.

In 1996, computing manufactured the first generation personal digital assistant known as the m130Pilot. Due to a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Pen Corporation the name was given to the second generation of PDA’s in 1997 and from 1998 onwards, this virtually became the generic name of all handhelds. Interesting huh!

Now, the founders of Computing, Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan who also are the original inventors of the actually when they first set out wanted to produce handwriting software named Graffiti. Fortunately, for the world they changed their plans midway, and decided to get into hardware. is known to have gained from the attempts of Apple Computer and Go Corporation to produce devices.

I bet you didn’t know that Computing was initially a division of US Robotics and then later of 3Com. Now Jeff, Donna and Ed who initially founded felt that the didn’t have enough control over the Product so as a result they left 3Com and founded Handspring in 1998.

Handspring became the first OS licensee and then produced a replica of the handhelds and called it the Handspring Visor which used slightly different software and had a hardware expansion slot.

Then in 2000 Computing became a separate company, which was called Incorporated. Then in 2003, Incorporated split into PalmOne for selling hardware and PalmSource for selling software. Handspring merged with to form PalmOne and in 2005 PalmOne acquired the full rights to the name, which it had shared with PalmSource and changed its name back to .

The earlier Palms used the popular DragonBall processors which were a Motorola 68000 derivative. But the more recent models use a type of ARM architecture. The Arm Architecture is a class of RISC microprocessors, which is widely used in embedded systems and devices. It is usually referred to by the Intel Xscale brand name.

Handhelds from are becoming more advanced and are merging with smart phones and they have the capacity to work as computer harddrives via USB cables. The Treo 650 which functions as a phone and also provides SMS, email and instant messaging.

It was predicted that as handhelds with multiple functions like the Treo become cheaper and more advanced, the traditional PDA device will disappear. manufacturers are already producing smart phones, which use interfaces similar to the OS and at present the OS is used by the Sony Clie’, TRG Pro and Handspring Visor, apart from the . Now wasn’t that an interesting history on something you most likely use everyday.
