Micro$oft Speaks to Windows Mobile 5 Upgrade Issues

by Damian Julien

It’s possible that advances in the OS are somewhat dependent on the gaming community.

We certainly have a few innovations that warrant a robust, stable OS capable of high-level API coding to partake of the best of the gaming realm.

The desktop PC owes a debt of gratitude to gamers. Unless, of course, you think that the user base was doing nothing else but playing with their MS Office apps on a routine basis.

The large drive towards hardware and processing power innovation is driven by folks largely like myself.

Video card manufacturers like ATI and nVidia have been posting record sales of high-end 3D hardware acceleration cards for years, with desktop PC gamers more than willing to pony up over $600 CDN on the next massively multipipelined hardware behemoth.

The world can hardly be called a parallel gaming universe.

A lot of frustration has been thrown Microsoft’s way, largely because of recent developments. The hx4700 is a case in point.

Hewlett Packard’s only VGA display was hampered by a revelation: no 5.0 upgrade could be issued for this device until the following spring.

You’ll find more details on the Brighthand.com site regarding this upgrade insight.

Problem is, the mettle of the hardcore game community is lacking. A recent poll off of the IPaqHQ forum site revealed that only just over five percent have opted for a with 5.

The greater majority is still on WM 2003 Second Edition. The game community has spoken, and by and large they are satisfied with the game power harnessed by devices utilizing this brand of operating system.

The Team Blog entry was an epiphany of sorts. Mike Calligaro’s article blog spoke to issues concerning disparaging Micro$oft detractors who insist on transposing those dollar signs in the middle of the company name.

His formula is as follows:

(Total cost of doing the upgrade) / (number of people who will use it) = (unreasonable price)

In essence, he attributes our PDA gaming community upgrade woes to diseconomies of scale, not greed.

I agree with Mike’s view because the dearth of hardware accelerated games speaks volumes.

The newer accelerated titles like GeoRally EX are less prevalent than new software rendered 3D titles like FFRace - Fast Future Race.

Even more revealing the former is targeted once again towards Axim x50v owners. If that in itself doesn’t reek of a lack of PDA hardware compliancy, I don’t know what does.

I’ve dubbed this the PlayStation 2 syndrome: just like the popular gaming console, game developers are catching on to making the most of the programming libraries at hand and producing top-notch games that can be used from 2002 onwards.

With such a broad compatibility demographic, I’ve already seen it; game production is issuing better games for common operating systems and is possible nearing its zenith for quality.

If things continue like this it will certainly put a crimp on our future upgrades.

Pocket PC Game Sexual Content Proliferating?

by Damian Julien

For some reason, game sexual content is starting to creep into our PDA downloads.

I can certainly understand why. A study on Computer Use in a Psychiatric Outreach Program found that PDA users were likely to be male physicians under 35 than to be female or older physician.

If these statistics apply to the population at large, I’m willing to bet that there may be some merit to it.

I mean, I’m smack in the middle of this age range myself. It figures that developers will target whatever demographic their market surveys happen to target.

Targeted, niche-based marketing in gaming is where it’s at, my brutha. I mean, chances are, you’re male.

That’s not to say that my entire game readership is made of solely of males. Females seem to have a proclivity toward non-thumb injuring games.

My wife loves my site, is an avid PDA gamer and is also an extremely zealous Bejeweled 2 puzzle gamer.

By the way, Jessie, hats off to you for your 23,142 Classic mode and 1,294,750 Action mode scores. She simply won’t admit that she’s been following the tips that I’ve posted on my site.

Kudos if I can put you squarely in the PDA puzzle game clique– iPAQ thumb from excessive button mashing can be painful at times. The joint of my thumb aches when I press down at an angle.

This was compounded by s-video based desktop PC gaming which is performed with the same Logitech wireless controller that I described in my September 19th blog entry.

My extended, fairly incessant gaming may also be attributed to this.

My latest site update involved an article detailing the brand spanking new Ultimate Bowling Fighter release. Not that there’s spanking involved, but there may as well be for the skimpy outfits some of those female pro bowlers wear.

Add a picture-in-picture screen with bouncy women holding up “Strike!” signs and low riding pants, and you’ve got a most unique PDA sports game download with some degree of sexual content.

Does this mean that we’re on the cusp of a sexual gaming revolution? Only time will tell.

WiFi Hotspots News is PDA Game Boon

by Damian Julien

I came across some intriguing access news on the TechNewsWorld site.

Seattle residents in the US are partaking of WiFi access made available by the King County Metro Transit.

While some folks in Seattle may be thinking of checking their email on the go and similar mundanities, I’ll be thinking along distinctly different lines if the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) suddenly adopts it.

Snails, Warfare Incorporated and some Stuntcar Extreme to whet my wireless multiplayer gaming appetite, for starters.

The only real problem would be convincing even the most dedicated PDA gamers in light of a recent, ill-timed bus shooting in the city.

Paranoia would presumably detract from the whole gaming experience.

Fortunately for and Palm gamers, there’s been an enormous push towards hotspot availability recently.

My WiFi Hotspots gaming article spoke of the city of Philadelphia’s talks to implement municipality-wide hotspot access.

It also mentions the recent access game agreement between McDonald’s and Nintendo for Nintendo DS users.

It may be for the best.

It’s advantageous to burn off some of the 1300 calories of a quarter pounder with cheese, large fries and large shake, albeit via rapid thumb movement.

With access becoming so prevalent, let’s get ready for the plethora of goodness that will hopefully follow.

Pocket PC Games - Your Guide To Free Full Versions

by profitweaver

More and more PDA users are adding playing games to the list of things they do on their PDA. You can spend unbelievable amounts of money on these games or you can get them for free. Who doesn’t like getting something for free? It is actually easier then you might think to get free full version games. You just have to know where to look. There are some different types of games and you should get to know about them before you go looking so you what will work for you.

The first type is called freeware. Freeware is, as its name suggests, free. You do not have top pay any registration or other fees. It can be freely distributed without worry. They are quite easy to find with a simple search on a search engine. Just type in the word “freeware” along with the name or type of game you are looking for. Another type of gameware is shareware. Shareware is only a partial version of a game. It is a way for a game maker to let you play before trying. Sometimes you have to pay a fee to be able to download the game. These types of game ware often have levels that are blocked or other features that you can not use until you pay a registration fee. Some games are actually worth getting as shareware because only advanced options are blocked, leaving you with the main game play accessible. One more downside to shareware is they often have what are called nag screens. These nag screens pop up to remind you to register the game. If you are looking for a truly free full version download you should probably stick with freeware.

There are two different types of games that can be found in freeware. There are clones and originals. Originals are much harder to find then clones. Usually free versions of an original game are only available for old games that are no longer profitable. The manufacturer then allows them to be distributed for no cost. Clone versions copy a popular game. The creator will make a new game based on the concept of an existing game. They change it up a little to avoid infringing on copyright laws. Clones are easy to find and widely available for all different PDA types. You will have the most luck finding a clone version of a game, but if it is an older game you may get lucky and be able to find it for free.

If you want a full version game for free you should definitely start searching the internet. The recommended things to look for are freeware clones. The beauty of clones are you are getting as game that is basically like the brand name version, but for free. Once you discover the world of freeware you will never buy a game again.

XBox Game Violence vs Pocket PC Pacifism

by Damian Julien

News of grisly -related killings is rapidly making the rounds within the relatively docile game community.

The MSNBC site recently outlined the jury’s recommendations for six people killed over an -related dispute in Florida.

After being evicted from the lodging where he had been squatting with his friends, Troy Victorino, 29, plotted revenge.

He returned with a couple of friends armed with baseball bats, where they summarily set about bludgeoning six other young people to death.

The most telling aspect of this unfortunate tale is that this was sparked by the property owner’s 22-year-old granddaughter.

She made the unlucky decision to hold on to the assailant’s after having them turfed from the property, adding insult to injury.

Curiously, it was this last slight that proved to be the proverbial last straw and not Victorino’s sudden social shift to homeless hobo.

The costly consoles typically sold for around $200.00 CAD at the time of these slayings.

Some may say it was small wonder that this would serve as a catalyst for grisly, unadulterated video game related horror.

If you typically fall prey to politician-like spurious leaps in logic, you’ll be counting down the days to an 360 related incident as prices for this Cadillac of consoles soar into the stratosphere.

In Toronto it’s retailing for $399.00 CAD at my local Best Buy outlet.

It’s just enough to expedite the trip from mild mannered game geek to drooling chainsaw-wielding psycho after considering PST and GST taxes.

You may recall that 360 console prices in the thousands of dollars posted on EBay during the initial release of this game system.

Microsoft had struggled to keep pace with demand due to an unfortunate decision to start manufacturing en masse 69 days prior to release.

This led to ludicrosity in the form of violence-inducing EBay prices with units going for as much as $2500 CAD.

Stories of XBox crashes and overheating were just beginning to surface as I detailed in an earlier article.

What concerns me most are the spurious, irrational conclusions that are sure to follow. You’re most likely familiar with the old, tired dogma linking violent video games to scenes right out of Tarantino’s Hostel.

I’m not one to be a hypocrite about these things. I’ve played games in the gruesome genre, including some memorable spine-ripping finishing moves in Mortal Kombat or some frighteningly authentic execution-style kills in Hitman.

If you frequent my site you may have noticed that there is a distinctive lack of violent games reviewed.

This is hardly an accident as you’ll be hard-pressed to find any for this platform, save for Killer Instinct emulator sessions.

As far as the game demographic is concerned, we’re emulating the European mindset.

Developers generally eschew gory violence but can still encounter erotic downloads like the sexy Strip Teaser PPC game download over at the Softpedia site.

Solving puzzles in this game allows you to pause, play and rewind various striptease videos, presumably during covert corporate bathroom breaks.

I can accurately discern between real-life and virtual violence in my permanent starring turn as a pacifistic pansy. Maybe I’m a bit of a deviant.

Just the same, I don’t think I’ll be doling out $500 CAD for an 360 right now. Microsoft’s one fingered salute in the form of one wireless controller may just lead to beserker rage.
